Clarity in Movement
Mar 21, 2018Have you ever had one of those situations where you just aren’t sure what you want to do? You have multiple choices laid out in front of you and you just can’t decide which is the right one. Every time you think you have decided on your choice, you come up with more reasons why you should choose the other or maybe not choose that one after all. I think we have all been there a time or two. Okay, maybe five! So what is a person to do?
I have found one key thing really helps a person gain clarity, and that is movement. You can choose whatever your favorite type of movement is. Maybe you like to ride a bike, go swimming, do yoga. Doesn’t really matter. Any of those solitary activities can help. Many find a nice long walk can really get your mind where it needs to be in order to make a decision. Getting the body moving in a way that your mind can go somewhere else is extremely cathartic. You will find that your mind just starts doing what it does best, thinking. It will weigh the pros and cons of your choices almost as soon as you get a nice rhythm going. Once your body finds it’s flow, your mind will too.
Let’s say you have been looking onto changing jobs. You heard about a position at another place that sounds like your dream job. The pay is great, lots of benefits, the whole nine yards. On the other hand, you have been with your current company for a long time. You know everyone, you aren’t unhappy and actually, you have it pretty good all things considered. You just can’t decide what you want to do. Stay where you are and possibly miss an opportunity? Or take the risk and go for the other job, knowing that you would have to leave all these people you have come to care about behind.
Taking a nice long walk somewhere would allow you to process through the entire situation and help you gain more clarity about the whole thing. I like to think of it as our time with God, talking things out and getting His perspective on things. If you have ever done this, you may know what I am talking about. It’s almost as though answers will just come to you. As your body moves, you may think of possibilities you never considered before. Just by moving your body in a subconscious way, you are allowing your mind to relax and do what it does best. Think. I just love that.
So the next time you just can’t seem to decide on something, do something physical. Get some movement in. Then watch your mind start to work out the kinks and deliver a solid plan to you. If you get done with your activity, but later start to waver then it’s time to get moving again. There is no magic number to how many times it may take before you feel happy with your choice.
