The Struggle of Starting Over
Sep 14, 2018It happens to the best of us. Maybe you had a rough day and thought, “Oh, skipping a day won’t hurt,” or you simply got busy and forgot. Next thing you know, it’s been days since you got a workout in. It’s completely normal to have an “off” day, but it’s important to not let it derail you. It’s easy to fall off the wagon, but climbing back on can be so extremely tough. That’s why I thought I would share some great tips to get back in the flow of things if you find yourself trying to climb back on but are struggling.
Get moving
One of the simplest ways to get going again is to force yourself to move. It doesn’t have to be some strenuous workout that will make you want to stop. It could be something simple like going for a walk around the block, hitting the walking trail or even turning on some music and dancing around the house. Just by getting your blood pumping and your body moving you can make a huge difference in your day. Easing back into things can really help get your motivation back. Even if you aren’t hitting it at your full 100 percent, you are at least getting some movement in and that can make a big difference.
Change the inner monologue
Beating yourself up over missing a day won’t exactly encourage you to get up and get moving. If anything, it will probably put you in a negative mindset that will only sabotage you more. The things you say to yourself in your mind can dictate what kind of a day you are going to have. If you are constantly telling yourself how terrible and hard your workout is going to be, you definitely won’t want to do it. That’s another reason why you should love your fitness routine. It’s easier to do when you love it! Get your head in the game and stay focused. Encourage yourself and reflect on the good job you have been doing. Get in the habit of patting yourself on the back and it will make getting things done much easier.
Go somewhere different
Looking at the same old gym or the same old street on your walk can make things boring. If you have gotten into a rut, changing things up can really help. Sitting around the house where the couch is calling your name definitely will not. Finding a new trail, trying a new workout or just heading outside for your session can really help. Fresh air and a new perspective can help get your head in the game and push you back onto the wagon. Sometimes it’s good to have different plans for different days, just to keep a little variety in your life.
